Directory of Artisans in Modern Osaka:Listening to the Stories of Creators

Special Exhibition “Directory of Artisans in Modern Osaka:
Listening to the Stories of Creators”

April 29 (Fri. and a national holiday) to June 20 (Mon.)

Overview of the exhibition

The Osaka Museum of History will hold a special exhibition titled “Directory of Artisans in Modern Osaka: Listening to the Stories of Creators” in the Special Exhibition Hall on the 6th floor from April 29 (Fri. and a national holiday) to June 20 (Mon.), 2016.

After the Meiji Restoration, Japanese craft making, which had undergone remarkable development and earned high reputation both in Japan and abroad, became centered in Tokyo. Far away from the capital, in Osaka, however, there were many creators who remained nameless and whose works were hardly known by the general public.

The year 2016 celebrates the 15th anniversary of the Osaka Museum of History. During these years, a number of Osaka-based artisans and their works have been discovered, resulting from 55 years of research and collection efforts by the Osaka Museum of History for the past 15 years and by its precursor, the Osaka City Museum, for the preceding 40 years.

This exhibition will showcase about 170 “forgotten works of Osaka,” some of which were discovered in the course of our museum activities and are being shown to the public for the first time. Characteristically, many of these exhibits cannot be recognized as works of art in a narrow sense, and thus, our museum is better suited to host this exhibition than any museum of art. Through the works created by Osaka-based artisans, the exhibition will highlight the splendor of Osaka’s modern craftsmanship that has remained largely unknown until today.
