The Pleasure of Collecting: Inbande Plates and Asian Kites

Special Featured Exhibition:
The Pleasure of Collecting: Inbande Plates and Asian Kites

December 7 (Wed.), 2016 to February 13 (Mon.)

Overview of the exhibition

The Osaka Museum of History will hold a special featured exhibition titled “The Pleasure of Collecting: Inbande Plates and Asian Kites” in the Special Exhibition Hall on the 6th floor from December 7 (Wed.), 2016 to February 13 (Mon.), 2017.

The term “inbande” refers to ceramic products on which patterns are applied using a printing technique such as copper plate painting. Inbande plates, which were produced in large quantities in and after the Meiji period, are popular Japanese antiques that appeal to many collectors for their subdued colors and usability. Mr. and Mrs. Yuasa, inbande collectors who live in Osaka City, have accumulated more than 1,000 inbande plates for the past 30 years.

Kimura Kaoru, a resident in Osaka Prefecture, has a different interest: He is a member of the Japan Kite Association, and has been collecting kites for about 40 years since he was a student. Asian kites and the pictures on the kites in his collection have unique shapes and designs that represent local characteristics and trends of the times.

By featuring inbande plates and Asian kites enthusiastically accumulated by these collectors from Osaka, the exhibition aims to share with visitors the pleasure of collecting and also the background of these two collections from an academic perspective.
