Overview of the exhibition

The Osaka Museum of History will hold a special exhibition titled “NHK Historical Drama Segodon” in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration in the Special Exhibition Hall on the 6th floor from July 28 (Sat.) to September 17 (Mon. and a national holiday), 2018.

In this milestone year of the 150th anniversary of the Meiji Restoration, an NHK historical drama features Saigo Takamori, one of the key figures of the Meiji Restoration. Despite his heroic achievements, no photographs of him exist today, and much about his life remains a mystery.

Saigo Takamori (aka Kokichi or Kichinosuke) was born into a low-ranking samurai family in the Satsuma domain (present-day Kagoshima Prefecture). He began working as an assistant for a samurai official in his early years to support his family in place of his parents who had died earlier. Later, he was recruited by Shimazu Nariakira, the feudal lord of the Satsuma domain, to travel to Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyo (present-day Kyoto) as a secret messenger of Nariakira, and in doing so, gradually became a key person of the Satsuma domain. After an impressionable adolescence, he married three times and was banished to remote islands twice. Saigo Takamori, who had been just a naive poverty-stricken low-ranking samurai, became a true revolutionist through interactions with influential allies such as Katsu Kaishu and Sakamoto Ryoma, and eventually played a leading role in overthrowing the Tokugawa shogunate. With unparalleled courage and energy, he made a great contribution to the Meiji Restoration but he died in a battle against the Meiji government.

This exhibition is held in conjunction with the NHK historical drama, Segodon to shed light on the profile of Saigo Takamori and the period in which he lived by showcasing artifacts relating to him and historical materials of his days.
