Overview of the exhibition

The Osaka Museum of History will hold a special exhibition titled “Monkey Painter, Sosen and His Two Brothers, along with Chicken Painter, Jakuchū and Frog Painter, Hōji” in the Special Exhibition Hall on the 6th floor from February 26 (Wed.) to April 5 (Sun.), 2020.

Mori Sosen (ca. 1747–1821) is one of the most renowned painters active in Osaka during the Edo period. Called a “monkey painter,” he is famous for his paintings of animals, especially monkeys, characterized by realistic depictions of fluffy fur. Sosen had two older brothers, Yōshin (ca. 1736–1808) and Shūhō (1738–1823). Both of them were also famous painters, known for paintings of the Kanō-school style, some which are humorous and make viewers smile.

Sosen’s contemporary artists who had a special interest in painting particular subjects include Ito Jakuchū known for paintings of chickens, Ganku for paintings of tigers, Matsumoto Hōji for paintings of frogs, and Nichōsai for caricatures. This exhibition will also focus on the works of these artists along with Sosen’s monkey paintings.

As the first exhibition to highlight Sosen together with his two brothers, this exhibition showcases those paintings of Sosen that are highly prized by foreign art collectors, including Mr. Joe D. Price who is known for the Jakuchū Collection, and many other animal paintings painted by Osaka- and Kyoto-based artists.
