In Osaka Museum of History, featured exhibit "Fukae – sedge hat making town, the history and culture of suburb in Osaka -" is held from January 5th to February 18th in 2008 in the eighth floor featured exhibition room.

Osaka City Cultural Properties Association was entrusted the investigation of cultural asset in Higashinari Ward in fiscal 2005, and the cultural asset related to the sedge hat (Suge gasa) of Fukae district and the living of the town were investigated. This exhibition introduces the history and culture of sedge hat making in Fukae area based on the result of the investigation through the old document, the drawing, and the ethnographical materials, and also presents the history and the culture of the farm village in Osaka outskirts.

The Fukae district (Fukae the north and Fukae the south) in Higashinari Ward of Osaka City developed as a farm village (At that time, Fukae-mura) in Osaka outskirts during and after the Edo period. The Kuragarigoe-Nara highway passed to the south of Fukae, and a lot of travelers who visited Ise jingu shrine from Osaka were coming and going.

The sedge work and hat making was developed from the ancient times, the Fukae mura village came to be famous for sedge work, presented as sedge hat making town in The Collection of Illustration of Famous Places in Settsu(Settsu Meisho Zue) in Edo period. Travelers of Ise pilgrimage also bought a lot of sedge hats. Moreover, Fukae sedge hat and fan have been prepared for removal of shrine of Ise jingu (Shikinen-sengu) and Great thanksgiving fest after the enthronement of Japanese emperor (Daijo-sai). "Sedge work of Fukae" was designated as Osaka City intangible cultural asset in fiscal 1999.
