The Yodo River is the principal river of Osaka, it has close relation with the development of Osaka. This special exhibition is held for the 100th anniversary of completion of artificial channel the Shin-Yodo River. It presents the relation between the development of Osaka as urban and the Yodo River, through the pictorial map, paintings, historical documents and so on.
The Yodo River has been drawn in many paintings and pictorial maps in each period. In this chapter we examine what people thought about the Yodo River, through these materials from the Edo to Showa period.
Osaka developed as economical center of Japan in the Edo period. It had close relation with the Yodo River. This part introduces the relation between Osaka and the Yodo River on the Several perspectives including the urban development and people's daily life covering the industry distribution, consumption and amusement.
In this chapter the history of the Yodo River improvement is introduced. It includes the floods and dredge work of the Yodo River from the Edo period until the Modern era, improvement of the Yodo River in the Meiji period containing the excavation works of the Shin Yodo River, and the historical change of local society in the Yodo River basin brought by the river improvement.
The close relationship between city and river are found in many different area of Japan. This chapter exhibits these examples of the Tone River with Edo, the Shinano and the Agano River with Niigata, and the Yoshino River with Tokushima.
