The Dotonbori canal was completed in 1615 when the Summer Siege of Osaka ended, exactly 400 years ago. The Osaka Museum of History owns Yasui Family Documents (a cultural property designated by Osaka City) that were handed down to Yasui family members, which had served as local officers (so-doshiyori) in charge of the township of Minami-gumi in Osaka for generations, and known for their contribution to the development of the Dotonbori canal and its vicinity. The exhibition will shed light on how the Dotonbori canal area was developed into a town by showcasing the materials concerning the excavation of the Dotonbori canal and historical materials that were discovered recently, including the “Large Map of the Dotonbori Canal,” which dates back to 1655.

Main exhibits Document instructing recommencement of the excavation of the Dotonbori canal (signed by Yamada Shigetsugu and three others), dated September 19, 1615 Yasui Family Documents (a cultural property designated by Osaka City) Owner: the Osaka Museum of History.

This document was issued by Matsudaira Tadaakira who became the lord of Osaka Castle after the Summer Siege of Osaka was over. This document instructs Hirano Toji and Yasui Kuhe-e to recommence the excavation of the Minamihori Canal (Dotonbori canal) and the development of town houses on both sides of the canal. This is the only original document dating back to the time of the excavation of the Dotonbori canal and, therefore it is very important.
